Jade and Zakara 14 January 2026

On 8 January 2026, a devastating wildfire destroyed large parts of Panthera Africa Big Cat Sanctuary in Stanford, Western Cape, South Africa, putting both the animals and their team in immediate danger. Thankfully, most of the animals survived without critical injuries, but the damage to several enclosures and facilities is enormous.
Through thick smoke and near-zero visibility, the Panthera Africa team worked tirelessly to evacuate the animals, guided by one clear principle: the safety and wellbeing of the animals always comes first. All of their animals were successfully kept safe from the fire.
We want to express our deepest sympathy and solidarity to the entire Panthera Africa team. Thanks to the swift and coordinated efforts of sanctuaries, veterinarians, firefighters, and support organisations across South Africa, extraordinary courage, dedication, and teamwork were shown during this crisis – a powerful reminder of what is possible when animal welfare comes first.
At The Lions Foundation, located in Schrikkloof Private Nature Reserve in Bela-Bela, South Africa, we were able to support Panthera Africa during this emergency. Two beautiful lionesses, Jade and Zakara, arrived safely at our sanctuary after an 18-hour journey by road. Their transport was arranged by Humane World for Animals South Africa, and we are deeply thankful for their help in bringing the lionesses to us safely.

These two lionesses were allowed to go into the large enclosure after first being given a few days to recover from their traumatic experience in their separation area. They are both doing very well. They feel completely at ease… just enjoying exploring. We are so happy that these two beautiful ladies have been able to adapt so well.
